EP Review; Chase Atlantic: “DON’T TRY THIS”

The Album:

After giving the alternative, pop musical world a strong debut album in 2017, fans were amped to hear that some new music was headed their way, and let me say- the fans won’t be disappointed. When listening to the EP, it is apparent that Chase Atlantic has not only found their sound, but they have refined and solidified it to make it their own. Keeping that in mind, when jumping into the music, it is heard that the band is giving their audience a simplified bass track for each selection. Through this, the band is able to extrapolate on different musical ideas through their vocal line as well as ornate instrumentals and electronic features. Meshing all of these techniques together forms a sound that is characteristic for the band, but it also creates this new and innovative sound that nudges the band towards a forward (leaning) radio sound as well as a sound that keeps them progressive in the alternative scene. Overall, I am giving this short record a 3.5 out of 5 stars. This is because the track-listing is cohesive and on brand for the band; also, the band gives the audience more music that will help them to evolve with the constantly changing music scene that they are a part of.

Top Tracks:

“DEVILISH” and “LUST”

Since this is only an EP, it was hard to pick which songs stood out among the small listing; however, after the first run of this record, one will be, immediately, hooked onto these selections. These tracks blur the lines between alternative, rock, and electronic pop perfectly. This meshing of musical styles is apparent throughout the whole release, but when these pieces come up, one can tell that the band is not playing. Therefore, if you’re going to give anything from this album a shot, start with these tracks.

The Artwork:

When first looking at the artwork for this album, it is apparent that the band was going for a simplistic approach. This aura comes off, for the cover image has a red background with the title towards the bottom right corner (when looking at it head on), and it appears that the title is fading away. And that’s it! This cover may easily invite audience members, for since the band is giving their listeners such a small amount of information, they may be more inclined to dive in to see what is in store. When connecting the cover to the music that lies on the inside, I would say that the two make a perfect match. Throughout the EP, the band provides their audience members with music that is smooth in nature, and most of the tracks are also simple in the same regard, but each have a little sprinkle of complexity here and there to make the content sound interesting. This is similar to the cover, for since there is little information on the cover, more people are likely to be interested because they fall for the fantasy of it. Furthermore, I would say that the relationship between the two enhances the overall vibe of the record, for it gives the audience the full sensation that the band is trying to relay through this release.

*”DON’T TRY THIS” was released on January 25th, 2019 through BMG Rights Management.
